Black Friday Storage Deals: What to Buy and What to Skip
Black Friday storage deals are a mixed bag every year. For every genuinely excellent discount on a quality SSD or hard drive, there are a dozen “deals” that are either inflated markdowns on mediocre products or prices you could have gotten any random Tuesday in September. I’ve been tracking storage pricing trends for years, and I want to help you separate the real bargains from the noise this Black Friday season.
Here’s your quick field guide to what deserves your money, what doesn’t, and how to avoid the most common traps.
How to Spot a Fake Black Friday Storage Deal
Retailers love the “was/now” pricing game. A drive gets listed at an inflated MSRP for a few weeks before Black Friday, then gets “discounted” back to its normal street price. You think you’re saving 40%, but you’re paying exactly what everyone else paid in October.
Before you buy anything, run the product through a price history tracker like CamelCamelCamel or Keepa. Both are free browser extensions that show you Amazon price history over months and years. If the “deal” price matches what the drive has been selling for regularly, skip it.
Also watch out for suspiciously cheap no-name SSDs. Black Friday brings a flood of brands you’ve never heard of offering 1TB SSDs at rock-bottom prices. These drives often use QLC NAND with no DRAM cache, meaning they’ll slow to a crawl once the SLC cache fills up. If you’re curious about why this happens, our guide on why your SSD slows down over time explains the mechanics in detail.
Black Friday Storage Deals Worth Buying
Internal SSDs (Best Category for Deals)
Internal SSDs, especially NVMe drives, consistently see some of the best Black Friday discounts. The Samsung 990 Pro and WD_BLACK SN850X are two top-tier Gen 4 drives that regularly hit their lowest-ever prices during this window. If you’ve been eyeing either one, we’ve done a head-to-head comparison of the 990 Pro vs. SN850X to help you decide between them.
For budget builds, the Samsung 870 EVO in the 2.5-inch SATA form factor is a reliable pick that often sees meaningful price drops. Not sure which form factor you need? Check our M.2 vs. 2.5-inch SSD comparison guide before you buy.

Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD
One of the fastest Gen 4 NVMe drives available, and Black Friday typically brings the best pricing of the year.
Portable SSDs
Portable SSDs are another category where Black Friday delivers real savings. The Samsung T7 Shield and SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2 are both proven, durable options. We’ve tested many of these in our roundup of the best portable SSDs for travel, and both hold up extremely well.

SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2 2TB
Excellent read/write speeds with IP55 dust and water resistance, perfect for on-the-go storage.
NAS Hard Drives
If you’re building or expanding a NAS, Black Friday is the time to stock up on WD Red Plus or Seagate IronWolf drives. NAS-rated drives rarely see deep discounts outside of major sale events. If you’re still deciding between cloud storage and a local NAS setup, our cloud backup vs. local NAS cost comparison breaks down the long-term economics.
What to Skip on Black Friday
Ultra-cheap external hard drives from unknown brands. These often use recycled or lower-grade platters, and you’ll have zero recourse if the drive fails in three months. Stick with Seagate, WD, or Toshiba for spinning drives.
DRAM-less budget SSDs marketed as “gaming” drives. The word “gaming” on the box doesn’t make a drive fast. A cheap QLC SSD with no DRAM cache and a flashy heatsink is still a cheap QLC SSD. For actual gaming performance differences between drive types, our SATA vs. NVMe real-world gaming test shows you what actually matters.
Last-generation portable hard drives (non-SSD). Portable HDDs are on their way out for most consumers. The speed difference compared to a portable SSD is massive, and the price gap has narrowed significantly. Unless you need 4TB+ of portable storage on a tight budget, a portable SSD is the better buy in every measurable way.
FAQ
Do Black Friday SSD deals carry through Cyber Monday?
Most do. In fact, some of the best storage deals from the past few years actually appeared on Cyber Monday rather than Black Friday itself. If you miss a deal on Friday, don’t panic. Keep your price tracker running and check again on Monday. Some retailers also extend deals through the full week after Thanksgiving.
Is it safe to buy storage from third-party sellers on Amazon during Black Friday?
Be cautious. Counterfeit SSDs and SD cards are a known problem on Amazon, especially during high-volume sale events. Always buy drives that are “Shipped from and sold by Amazon” or directly by the manufacturer. If a third-party seller offers a price dramatically lower than everyone else, treat it as a red flag. Counterfeit drives often show the correct capacity initially but corrupt your data once you exceed their true (much smaller) storage.
